We are starting to like obstacle race, it is fun and fulfilling especially once you’ve reached the finish line.
This April we are joining the Spartan Race in Austin, Texas where my husband and I will be doing the sprint while our eldest son doing the half mile race.
Spartan is a long running race with obstacles with punishments. What you need to do is intense training and lots of running before the race.
How do we prepare for this race?
- We have to reached our weight goals or at least loss some. Weight is very important as it determines how easy or hard you can carry yourself from the obstacles which is usually pull ups and rope climbing.
- We eat properly. Food gives us energy and the nutrients we needed for the race. Mostly we eat oatmeal, milk, oat bread, potatoes, vegetables and fruits. Also make sure to get hydrated, so drink lots of water.
- We sleep well. This will helps us recuperate from all the hard trainings and running. We try to have at least minimum of 6 hours of sleep (not enough, but lower than that will do you harm).
- We run as much as we can, if the weather permits we go to the park and run otherwise we run on the threadmill.
- We train as much as we can. We do burpess (as this is the punishment), pullups, trying the rope pullups (not easy for me by the way), pushups, crunches, lifting for almost everyday. These trainings will prepare us for the obstacles from the race.
Some might think it is too much, well yes it is but “no pain no gain”. Maybe not any material gain but the confidence and strength to conquer obstacles and be able to finish the race is worth the pain.
Just realized the training is as hard as the race itself.
