Why do you need the belt in Jiu Jitsu?

April 7, 2016 By: Katycomment

“Why do you need the belt in Jiu Jitsu?” my eldest son asked…

Hmmp.. I pause for a while and also began to wonder. Thinking, more likely it is not used just to hold the pants.

I answered him; “The belt is used to show the rank and how good they are in Jiu Jitsu”.

Then he asked me again, “what is rank?”.

That’s the time I told him that I will get back to him and do some research.

Here’s what I learned;

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu rank or ranking system is given to a fighter or practitioner a different colored belts which signifies the increasing levels of their technical knowledge and practical skill. Here are the different belt colors where for the young ones “white” signifies beginner and “green” is the highest belt. While in adults “white” for beginner and black as the highest belt.

Then I get back to my son and told him that “rank” is a grading system like his report card in school, in which shows how good is he doing in reading, writing and so on. Also told him that the belt means that you have to train more to get to the next belt color or rank. I showed him the different colored belts and ranking in Jiu Jitsu (pictures makes it easier for them to understand). Luckily he was satisfied with my answer. Realized, I have to study more about this sport as my son are really into it.
